When Aid for Animals responded to a call about a dog crawling through trash, they were totally unprepared for what they would see. The poor boy had both hind legs tied up and the rescuers didn’t know why.
He dragged himself along, panting from the heat of the sun and from the pain. Fortunately, this was only the beginning of his journey, writes ilovemydogsomuch.
The dog was taken back to the rescue center. They placed him on the examination table. It was not obvious to the vet and his team why he was paralyzed. There were no obvious wounds or scars. But when they touched him, his body went completely rigid with pain. He was heartbreaking.
The rescuers decided to name the dog «Comfortable.» But the dog was anything but comfortable. The dog received sedation and pain medication, so he was fine and relaxed, but then time passed and after sleeping and eating, his entire behavior changed.
Comfy didn’t want to be touched at all. He would growl and bark if anyone tried. The main problem was that, in order to help Comfy recover, he needed physical therapy, which required a therapist to touch him.
What were they going to do now? How were they going to help this dog without further traumatizing him?
They had to come up with a plan. The first step was to consult his most experienced trainer. She agreed to work with Comfy. He had to start trusting human touch in order to start physical therapy.
It was obvious that he had to be approached slowly and with compassion. And that’s exactly what the coach did.
Comfy was very nervous at first. Especially when it came time for therapy. His body tensed and he was tempted to growl again. But little by little, and steadily, through patience and compassion, Comfy learned that the hands that were laid on him were to help him, not hurt him.
