OTHER ANIMALS

Meet Jonathan, the huge 189-year-old tortoise who holds the record for the world’s largest living land mammal.

It is believed that Jonathan were taken to Île Sainte-Hélène around the year 1832.

Jonathan appears to be a grown adult in a photo taken in 1902.

Since it takes about half a century for a large tortoise to grow to adult size, it is thought to have been born around 1832.

1902 vs Now

Although Jonathan was the first living earth pet, other turtles lived much longer in the past.
